One-on-one poker can be played in a variety of poker games and variations, such as:
The object of the game is to have the best poker hand and win the pot. Rules apply as they do in the specific type of poker (i.e., one-on-one Texas Holdem is the same as tournament Texas Holdem). Of course, there are only two players involved. The poker room sets the buy-in limit. Players start off with the same amount of chips, and blinds/antes increase over time. There is usually no limit in betting rounds (see No-Limit Poker for more information).
Strategies and play for one-on-poker are usually applicable to the final table of tournament poker, since the game ends up with two players going head to head. However, in most cases one player will have more chips and will have a distinct advantage. Also, by this time, the blinds/antes are very high so a player with a small stack will be a greater disadvantage.
Strategies will depend on your opponent. Most players play cautiously at the beginning of a one-on-one poker tournament because they want to observe how the other player reacts to different situations, how they bet, what their tells are, etc. Consistency is a good strategy; always bet the same way whether you have a good hand or a poor hand. At the same time, being unpredictable and varying your approach can keep your opponent off balance. Knowledge is power, so try to find out as much about your opponents style and tendencies.
