No-Limit Poker involves a lot of strategy because you are not limited by the amount you can bet during any given hand. These types of poker games tend to be more intense because you can win or lose a large sum of money in one round of betting. Unlike the other betting structures, there is no limit on how much you can bet at any stage of betting during the game.
There is always a minimum bet during No-Limit Poker. You must bet al least the amount of the big blind (see Blinds for more information) during any given round of betting. For example, if the blinds are $25 and $50, then bets may proceed as follows:
- Before the flop = $50 per bet (minimum bet)
- On the flop = $50 per bet
- On the turn = $100 per bet (large bet)
- On the river = $100 per bet
A player can bet any amount that matches or exceeds the big blind. If a player bets more than you have, you can go all-in (bet the remainder of your money). In this case, you are limited by how much you can win based on what you put into the pot. For example, if a player bets $500 and you only have $250, if you go all-in and win, then you only win $250 of that players $500 bet. If several other players bet $500 each and you win on your $250 all-in bet, you win $250 from each player, and then one of the other players would win the remaining money (also known as the sidepot).
The more money you have at a No-Limit Poker game, the better off you will be. Most poker rooms limit the amount of money that a player can bring to a table to start a game. Poker tournaments start all players off with the same amount of money. However, when a player wins money during the game and builds up a stack of chips, then that player has the advantage of placing larger bets. This forces players with less money to go all-in or fold when they do not want to risk their chips.
