Multi-table Limit tournaments are slightly different than regular limit games (read Limit Poker for more information about playing this style of tournament). The gap concept is an integral part of the game. As the game progresses, players should focus more on winning pots then just winning money for the long run. When blinds get large, you want to avoid competition and steal blinds where you can.
A good strategy to start with is to play hands that have a higher likelihood of winning. Chasing flush and straight draws tends to be a losing proposition, whereas you have better odds when you play pocket pairs (mid to high). Ace high hands with high kickers (King or Queen) are also valuable because they dominate most hands. As you go deeper into the tournament, watch out for high-risk confrontations with hands that can be easily dominated by other cards.
Play according to the mood of the table. If the table is playing tight, then you should raise when necessary in order to steal blinds. Raise before the flop with a marginal hand (such as an Ace-Nine offsuit). However, avoid conflict when you have a marginal hand. If another player raises before you and you have a marginal hand, be prepared to throw it away so that you do not lose too much on the pot. The goal is to dominate hands and scare off opponents who think that you have better cards than them.
Of course, if someone raises before you and have a great hand, like King-King, you should re-raise to back them off or make them pay for thinking that you are bluffing. Raising bets and re-raising other players tells the other players that you are challenging them and will take their chips if they dare call your raise.
As always, knowledge of your opponents is key. Smart players know about the gap and will fold marginal hands, like an Ace-Ten offsuit, when another strong player raises before the flop. Weak players will call regardless of what is in their hand. Good players will base their play on their cards and how they compare to what another player may have, whereas a weak player will just play their hand. Weak players will call when they hit anything, and will call all the way to the river.
Multi-table Limit tournaments require a combination of luck, skill, stamina and knowledge. Know the players and their styles, which you will be able to gauge as the tournament will take some time to play and you observe your opponents in different situations. Weak players will not last into the latter stages. Try your luck at Limit poker in one of the many fantastic online poker rooms.
