Knowing When to Quit

Face facts - even poker professionals lose. Poker streaks - winning and losing - can go on for extended periods of time (days, weeks, months, etc.). The health of your bankroll depends on knowing when to cashout at poker. A good rule of thumb when playing Limit Poker is to quit after a swing of 40 big bets. It is quite understandable that you will want to continue playing after losing 40 consecutive big bets, but true poker winners understand the reasoning behind it. Of course, if you are doing very well for 40 big bets, then you will probably want to continue playing.

No matter how many hands you decide to play, or for how many hours, you should consider quitting for the day if you constantly on tilt, you are overly tired, or you have other things that need to be done.

You will be able to recognize that you are on tilt if:
  • You want to keep returning to the action right away
  • You think that every opponent is bluffing
  • You have a need to break even

You will know that you have reached your daily limit if:
  • You have exceed 10 hours in a day
  • You lose focus and cannot follow what the opponents are doing
  • You fall asleep at the table
